A Geopolitical and Cultural Treasure

The “Balkans” was originally a term for the mountain range stretching from the Adriatic to the Black Sea, but today it represents a cultural crossroads shaped by Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences. From Croatia to Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, and beyond, the region’s tumultuous 20th-century history is still visible in its historic buildings, traditional dishes, and the enduring pride of its people. Traveling here means walking in the footsteps of empires and kingdoms, all while connecting with communities that have safeguarded their heritage for generations.

I never expected to find such beauty in Slavonia and Baranja. The peaceful vineyards, stunning views from Goldberg Hill, and the delicious local food made this part of Croatia a true gem. The wine tasting at Vina Belje was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the region’s traditions. It is a must-see for those looking to explore the less-traveled side of Croatia.
