Arrival in Metković, in the valley of the river Neretva and the area rich in various plant and animal species. The first place we will visit is the Natural History Museum in Metković. The current museum was developed from the former Ornithological Collection and is one of the largest ornithological collections in Europe. There are approx. 360 preparations and plants from different habitats from this area (rivers, swamps, and forests, macchia, grasslands, rocks and grindstones, caves) presented in nine units. Afterward, we will take a stroll through the City Park which is home to many birds because of the different types of trees and their ages.
We head to our accommodation. Dinner and overnight follow.
Today we embark on a photo safari. A ride through the narrow canals and backwaters of the Neretva Valley in a traditional Neretva boat gives you a unique experience and the opportunity to peek into the untouched nature of the wetland of this area where the habitats of unique specimens of birds are hidden. The Neretva boat meant life, and today it is a pride and an indelible trace of tradition that delights every visitor to the Neretva Valley. In order to better evoke the life of Neretva in this unique swampy area, the kind host will take you through the labyrinth of Neretva canals and provide you with an unforgettable photo safari adventure, traditional atmosphere, and the opportunity to get to know the rich flora and fauna of this area.
After the ride we head to lunch, followed by socializing in a relaxing environment. Free afternoon.
In the area of the City of Metković, there are two special ornithological reserves under protection, namely “Prud” and “Pod gredom”. A tour of the reserve follows. Their main feature is the dense wetland vegetation made up of reeds and other wetland flora, so it is an ideal area for nesting and wintering grounds for various species of birds.
The “Pod Gredom” ornithological reserve is located east of the Matica River and north of the Norin River. The reserve includes the wetland area of the Neretva delta with an area of about 560 hectares and one of the few preserved Mediterranean reeds.
The “Prud” ornithological reserve is located east of the settlement of the same name and the town of Vid and the river Norin, which springs and flows through it. The reserve covers the wetland area of the Neretva delta with an area of about 320 hectares and is one of the rarely preserved Mediterranean reeds.
On the hill above Metković, there is a significant landscape Predolac – Šibanica. Lovers of walks and bird watchers have access to themed and recreational trails that lead through the forest area. The whole of Predolac and the area of Šibanica is important for the wintering of many bird species, especially songbirds.
