Border guards of the golden plain, the story of “Cvelferija”, is the history of this geographic area
Drenovci, Cvelferija Museum, getting to know the history of border protection with a tour of the settlements of the Drenovci municipality: Đurići, Posavski Podgajci, Račinovci and Rajevo Selo.
But what is “Cvelferija”?
Geographically, Cvelferija is an area in the west of Srijem, which borders Serbia in the east and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the south, and includes the villages of Drenovci, Posavski Podgajci, Rajevo Selo, Đurici, Račinovci, Gunja, Vrbanja, Soljani, Stošinci.
The Austro-Hungarian monarchy began as early as 1701 with the formation of the Slavonian military border, a defensive corridor to the Ottoman Empire. The process of creating the military border in Slavonia lasted until 1750, and then took the forms that would last until the development of the military border in the second half of the 19th century.
The name comes from the time of the military border and arose from the name of the Twelfth Company, based in Drenovci (German: twelve = cvelf).
But Cvelferija is actually more of a historical name than a geographical name.
So Drenovci had the command post, because of most of the households. In total, the Drenovac Company had 453 houses and 261 soldiers.
It is best to start our tour in Drenovci at the Cvelferija Museum, where an expert guide will take us into the not too distant past of this picturesque area. This has always been the boundary between different cultures and customs.
Who of us does not know the famous poem / song by Đuko Galović:
“We have been border guards for a long time
we guarded the border on the Sava …”
We continue the tour through some villages of Cvelferija: Đurići, Posavski Podgajci, Račinovci and Rajevo Selo.
Since this trip led us through the stories of the tour guide into the time of our ancestors, lunch on one of the family farms is a good option.
With an abundance of Slavonian specialties that are served with a lot of love and attention, no guest should go hungry.
We leave the picturesque area of Cvelferija relaxed, cheerful and happy.
