Sućuraj is a small tourist and fishing village on the eastern cape of the island of Hvar. With its position and port, it is closest to the mainland. Sućuraj has had a turbulent past, which is not surprising giving it exists for more than 2300 years. Croats and many others have left historical traces in this area both in architecture and in culture in general. It was strategically built with small stone houses, connected to each other, in narrow and closed streets in order to defend himself against pirates from the Neretva.
It’s possible to swim along the whole coast, on both sides, north and south side of the island. Enjoy your vacation in all weather conditions, no matter where the wind blows from. More than 25 km of coastline awaits you with picturesque sandy, pebble, or rocky beaches and coves.
When walking through the picturesque streets do not miss out on the historical and sacral sights.
The oldest preserved building is the Franciscan monastery probably built in the 9th century. The monastery was demolished several times and last renovated in 1994. Important archival documents lie in the monastery. In the treasury of the parish court is a larger fragment of a Roman white mosaic, which was found on the site of today’s monastery.
The parish church of St. George, after whom Sućuraj got its name, was established at the end of the 19th century. In the churchyard, you can see a memorial plaque written in Bosnian (Croatian Cyrillic).
The baroque church of St. Anthony from 1663 was built by the Franciscans while fleeing from the Turks. Locals say that in this church there are two statues: “Thin St. Anthony” and “Fat St. Anthony”: St. Anthony of Padua (to whom the church is dedicated) and St. Anthony Abbot.
The Venetian fortress named Fortica from 1613 was built to protect the area. It had cannons and a permanent military crew that provided a much safer life for the locals.
The Sućuraj Lighthouse is surrounded by the sea on three sides and an indented, low, rocky shore. It was built in 1889 and consists of a square stone tower and a building that includes a ground floor and an attic. Within the lighthouse, there is a boat dock and a gazebo with a barbecue. It is an ideal place for all those who want to enjoy their vacation with no interruptions, far away from stress and crowds.
The resort house has 4 rooms and 4 bathrooms with 8 main beds and a cot. It offers a modern kitchen, microwave oven, heating, air conditioning, dishwasher, wash machine, Internet, 5 satellite TVs, safe, terrace, grill, and parking.
