We arrive in the municipality of Nijemci, hidden between wheat fields, the river Bosut and the century-old Spačva forest. Our local guide is waiting for us in the central park where he will hold a short introductory presentation. We start off by getting to know the cultural and historical heritage in the center of town.
A short walk takes us to the parish church of St. Catherine from the 14th century that proudly stands on the prehistoric site of Gradina. In the nearby Homeland Museum “Luka Natali” there is an exhibition that presents the historical story of the place, from its origins through the Middle Ages to recent history. An interesting part of the museum is the so-called “Grandma’s room” decorated in a traditional style with details from the past.
Continuing towards the Elementary School “Ivan Kozarac”, we will get to know the long and turbulent history of their education system. The first records of its founding date back to the 17th century. In the neighboring street, next to the church, we will visit the filming location of “Đuka Begović”. (Đuka Begović is a Croatian film based on Ivan Kozarac’s novel about the life of a fictional character named Đuka. After thirteen years in prison, 40-year-old Đuka Begović returns to his home village with the intention of starting a new and honorable life.)
After the tour, time for refreshments and rest before sailing.
The ship St. Catherine is anchored by the Arboretum park. In this traditional Syrmia garden, you will find different varieties of indigenous plants, enriched with interesting elements that simply invite you to relax and socialize in nature. The ship St. Catherine awaits as we begin our sail and explore the river Bosut. There are several sailing programs depending on the duration and daily schedule, whichever you choose you simply can’t go wrong.
The river Bosut is specific and unusual because of its peaceful course. As you sail through untouched nature and unique landscape rich in flora and fauna you will feel like you are on an expedition in a rainforest. The official part of the tour ends with lunch on the ship or at the excursion site Sopotac, located near the forest by the river. It is an ideal place to continue socializing because it is equipped with gazebos, a children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment, benches, and observation decks. Binoculars, telescopes, and bird watching manuals are also available to bird watchers.
