Dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast. We take off for a daylong excursion to the city of Đakovo and its surroundings, famous for the Đakovo Cathedral of St. Peter and Đakovo Lipizzaner. Upon arrival, we take a tour of the cathedral, better known by the name of its builder J. J. Strossmayer as Strossmayer Cathedral. It contains 7 altars, 43 frescoes, 31 statues, 32 reliefs, organ… and will not leave anyone indifferent. Right next to the cathedral, in the area below the archbishop’s palace, there is a wine cellar of the Đakovo-Osijek archdiocese, where we will taste Mass wines and watch a short movie projection about the production and processing of their wine.
We continue towards Strossmayer Park, a favorite city promenade, created almost two centuries ago. We arrive at the first location of the State Lipizzaner Stables in the center of the city, one of the oldest stables in Europe with a horse breeding tradition that lasts more than 500 years. An expert guide will take us around the stables.
After visiting the second location of Ivandvor, we leave for lunch at Hotel Đakovo and have a break.
If there were to be enough time and interest, we could visit the artificial lake Borovik, a famous picnic area for fishing, swimming, barbecue, and camping. The 8 km path along the lake makes it an attractive route for walkers and cyclists. Time to return to Otočki Virovi for dinner with a stop for a rest along the way. Overnight stay.
After breakfast and check-out we drive to the city of Otok, the youngest city in Croatia. We will explore the Otočka Suvara, a horse-powered mill made in the 19th century that has been declared a monument of the highest cultural value and the only renewed and preserved object of its kind in Croatia and southeast Europe. We continue our orientation walk of the city square where there is a monument dedicated to fallen Croatian airmen and defenders of Otok during the Homeland war.
