Arriving in the town of Ilok, we will begin our acquaintance with this area with a tour of the old town.
We will certainly start the history of the town of Ilok with Nikola Iločki, the most famous noble lord of this town. During his reign, Ilok experienced its “golden age” and the city center was fortified with walls that largely survive to this day.
We visit the Church of St. Johan Capistrano, who is also the patron saint of Ilok town. We learn about its historical role for the city of Ilok and beyond.
The old town has two monuments from the period of Ottoman rule, Turbe and Haman.
And as the last point of the tour is the magnificent castle of the noble Odescalchi family, which is also the museum of the city of Ilok.
After visiting the museum, just a few meters away is the Ilok Cellar, where lunch awaits us.
After a short break we went to the winery “Trs”. The vineyards of this winery are located on the slopes of Fruška Gora at an altitude of 200-260 m.
Visit and wine tasting
Return to accommodation, dinner, free time, overnight.
We begin to get acquainted with the settlements of Ilok.
First we visit Mohovo, a village halfway between Vukovar and Ilok, sightseeing of the Catholic Church of St. Nikola Tavelić and the Orthodox Church of the Ascension of the Lord.
Mohovo has a new-old landmark. It has become an important mammoth bone finding site “Mammoth Valley”.
Bapska is our second settlement we visit. The Romanesque church of Our Lady of Bapska stands out, which was later baroque.
In addition, Bapska owns a prehistoric site “Gradac”, the age of which is 5,000 years BC. dated.
The last settlement for today is Šarengrad on the slopes of Fruška gora.
A striking sight is the Gothic tower of the church and monastery on one side and the mighty Danube on the other.
Here in Šarengrau we went to the “Krešić” winery on the banks of the Danube. With a beautiful view of the mighty river we have a wine tasting.
In Ilok a late lunch awaits us in the old cellar, after a short break we have another winery in front of us.
We drive to Knezović Winery in Ilok.
Sightseeing and wine tasting.
Return to accommodation, free time, dinner and overnight.
Breakfast and we drive to the easternmost part of Croatia, a hamlet on the border with Serbia, Radoš. In Radoš, the renovation of the regional school and the Slovak Home is in progress.
Since we are near the highest point of the Vukovar-Srijem County, the top is Liska (297 m), we start walking the Liska hiking and mountaineering route of the same name.
Coming back to Ilok we drive to OPG Barbarić, a family farm with a traditional production of many kinds of brandy, liquor and brandy.
Visit and tasting.
Then lunch on the banks of the Danube in the restaurant “Donau”.
After lunch, another interesting tasting awaits us at the Zelenika family farm.
This is followed by a tasting of sparkling wine, wine and chocolate pralines.
Return to accommodation, free time, dinner, overnight.
Another day full of wine awaits us before we head home.
We start with the Ilok Wine Route – with breaks in wineries.
Ilok Wine Route is different from others because almost all winemakers are concentrated in the village. Family businesses with cellars called “Kelbovan” cellars, in the hill or directly in front of the house.
We recommend starting with the Alter Kellern winery in Ilok and then going to wineries in the upper or lower town.
To experience the countryside and vineyards, be sure to visit the Vukovo and Principavac vineyards and viewpoints…
We have visited a few wineries but there are still many left…
Therefore we make a suggestion for other wineries in this wine region:
“Buhač wine” – Ilok
Winery Dragun – Ilok
Winery “Šaravanja” – Ilok
Cellar “Maria” – Ilok
Winery “Ivan Čobankovic” – Ilok
