When you arrive in Varaždin, head straight to the charming Countess Marica café in the heart of the city next to the town hall. Order coffee and enjoy excellent desserts or maybe the Varaždiner “Klipić” (savory biscuits).
We are in an ideal location because the watch shift is every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in front of the town hall. The Varaždin Citizens Guard will end the program with a cannon shot at 12.00 p.m. punctually.
As befits the first Croatian capital, Varaždin was guarded for two and a half centuries by the Varaždin Citizens Guard, which received its first known statute from the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in 1750. It is an honor to be a member of the Varaždin Civil Guard. Only a native Varaždin who is proud of his honor can become a member.
After this great performance we go to the Museum of Angels. If you are often or for the first time in Varaždin, you will be surprised by the angels, all these beautiful, chubby baroque heavenly children. Surrender yourself to the angels, they will reveal to your eyes the hidden corners of the city, reveal forgotten places and unexplored ancient legends. You are here to meet or find your angel. The one who watches over your dreams ..
It’s lunchtime, don’t worry, there are many great restaurants in the center.
Accommodation in a hotel and pension, free time, dinner, overnight.
Breakfast and check out of the room, go to the center of the baroque core and walk towards the Herzer Palace. In the palace there is a museum, an entomological collection by Prof. Košćeca there is presented in a permanent exhibition entitled “The World of Insects”.
You will be surprised how much this mostly hidden miniature world has to reveal to us.
According to experts and visitors, it is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Europe. Through several themes: in the forest, in the forest and on the meadow, in the water and on the bank, at night and in the ground, the biology of insects is vividly presented in the exhibition on around 4500 exhibits.
And to end your visit to Varaždin, visit the baroque streets, the visible beauty and some hidden corner, the offer is really great: the fortress “Stari grad”, the Ursuline Church of the Nativity and the monastery, the Drašković Palace, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mestrovic’s Gregory of Nin, the union palace … inexhaustible treasures of Varaždin. Take a good look around, you will notice chubby, smiling, sometimes cheeky little angels, because according to legend, Varaždin is a city where angels sleep.
Note: Guard duty of the Citizens Guard: from May 15 to October 15, every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in front of the town hall.
