With the carriage through the municipality of Nijemci

Take a carriage ride through the Srijem Plain and Nijemci Municipality, or better yet, enjoy nature and unspoiled scenery. The sound of hoofbeats on the road takes us back to the old days when everything was done with horses.

We drive to Srijem to the Nijemci municipality. The place is surrounded by fertile fields, forest (Spačva basin) and the Bosut river. Idyllic and tame area.

Arrived in the center of the municipality, a local tour guide is waiting for us, who will lead us through the history of this area, the place with historical buildings and, above all, natural beauties.

We start the tour from the parish church of St. Catherine from the 14th century which proudly stands on the prehistoric site of Gradina. In the nearby local museum “Luka Natali” there is an exhibition that faithfully depicts the historical history of the place from its beginnings through the Middle Ages to more recent history. An interesting part of the museum is the so-called “Grandma’s Room” decorated in a traditional style with details from the past. We will get to know the long and turbulent past of the educational system, which continues towards the primary school “Ivan Kozarac”. The first records of the school’s founding date back to the 17th century.

In the next street, next to the church, there is a location for the scene of the film “Đuka Begović” from 1991.

(Djuka Begovic is a Croatian film based on Ivan Kozarac’s novel about the life of a fictional character named Djuka. After thirteen years in prison, 40-year-old Djuka Begovic returns to his home village with the intention of starting a new and honorable life).

After the tour there is time for refreshment and a break before the carriage ride. Isn’t it a real pleasure to end the tour of Nijemci Municipality, on horseback or by carriage.

If you are an experienced rider, take the bridle path that leads from the HORIS barn (Hors Ride in Srijem) to the Sopotac excursion site. For those who prefer comfort in sightseeing, it is recommended to sit in a carriage and enjoy nature, the beauty of the Srijem Plain and its assets.
