A Geopolitical and Cultural Treasure
The term Balkans has evolved over time, first coined by the German geographer August Zeune in 1808. While originally referring to the mountain range that spans from the Adriatic Sea to the Black Sea, it now represents a cultural and historical region that encompasses countries like Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, and others. The region has a unique geopolitical history, shaped by centuries of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule.

For much of the 20th century, the Balkans was a focal point of political and social transformation, and the remnants of this rich past are still visible today in the architecture, food, and traditions of the people. As a traveler, you’ll not only see these historical sites but also connect with the local communities that have preserved their culture for generations.

Goldberg Hill in Popovac, Baranja, is renowned for its exceptional terroir, making it one of the premier wine and fruit-growing regions in Croatia. The hill's fertile slopes are home to numerous vineyards and orchards, producing high-quality wines and spirits. Notably, the Weinpert family has established a guest house near Karanac, on micro-location Goldberg, offering visitors a chance to experience the local hospitality and flavors of the region.

A highlight of the Baranja region's culinary tradition is roasted lamb on a spit, a dish embodying local gastronomy's essence. This method involves slow-roasting a whole lamb over an open fire, allowing the meat to become tender and infused with a smoky aroma. The lamb is typically seasoned simply with salt, allowing its natural flavors to shine. Accompaniments often include young potatoes, spring onions, and homemade bread, creating a hearty and satisfying meal.

I’ve traveled all over Europe, but the Balkans offered something completely different. The city walls in Dubrovnik were majestic. I also loved the day we spent in Mostar, soaking in the rich cultural blend of the region. It felt like stepping back in time. The accommodations were excellent, and the food was to die for! If you’re thinking about this trip, don’t hesitate—you will make memories you’ll cherish forever.

I couldn’t have asked for a better vacation. The Balkans tour offered a great mix of sightseeing and relaxation. One of my fondest memories was visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park—the waterfalls and crystal-clear waters were beyond beautiful. It was the perfect balance of history, nature, and culture. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore new places at a comfortable pace. I will come back :)

Our trip through the Balkans was simply unforgettable! We spent 14 days exploring the rich history and stunning landscapes of Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia. The Old Town of Dubrovnik was a highlight, as well as the boat tour around the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. I never imagined I’d find such beauty in a part of Europe I hadn’t thought much about before. I loved tasting the local food, especially the cevapi in Bosnia. It was an experience of a lifetime, and I already have it on my list to return in a few years!
