Sisak-Moslavina County, bordered by forests and hills, is located in central Croatia south of Zagreb. The central city of this county is one of the oldest Croatian cities, the city of Sisak.
On the outskirts of this city rests a dense emerald forest and in the center of the city flows the river Kupa. An emerald green beauty where you can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, boating or enjoy fishing and the silence of the river. The sun-shined forest and the river and the Old Town form an idyllic picture. Bicycle paths at every step, rows of linden, wild chestnut and maple trees, as well as landscaped parks and promenades will captivate you with their beauty.
Downstream from Sisak, along the left bank, lies Lonjsko polje, one of the largest and best-preserved natural floodplains in Europe.
The greatest wealth of Lonjsko polje are the birds, of which there are as many as 250 species, but its most famous inhabitants are still storks, which like to nest on the roofs of picturesque wooden village houses. One of these villages, Čigoć, was declared the first European village of storks in 1994.
Čigoć is a small village inhabited by more white storks than humans and according to the number of nests this place has the largest population of storks in Europe. In the village, a wooden house has been arranged as an information and educational center of the Nature Park, and a small traditional carpentry workshop has been renovated. Here you can see an ethno exhibition of traditional tools and objects related to rural household in the 19th and first half of the 20th century.
You can get to know Lonjsko polje by bike and on foot.
Cycling through Lonjsko polje is a special experience because it is in contact with four rivers – Sava, Trebež, Pakra and Ilova. The trails are mostly flat, paved, forest and macadam. Drive at the pace you want, stop, take photos, enjoy the natural beauty.
If you decide to take a walk in the Visitor Center in Čigoć, you can ask for advice on hiking trails and choose the one that suits you best.
