The beautiful town of Metković is located in the heart of the Neretva Valley in the south of Croatia.
The town of Metković is the first stop of the magnificent Neretva River in Croatia, a river that has been flowing towards the sea for centuries. Towards the end of her journey, this green beauty created a valley that is often reffered to as Croatian California. For the inhabitants of this area, the river Neretva is and always will be „ the flowing goddess”.
If you want to enjoy the view of the beautiful green valley, take a walk from the center of Metković along the path that leads above the city. You will walk the trails that date back to the Austro-Hungarian era. From the Predolac hill there is a beautiful view of the city and the green valley.
The Neretva River Delta is one of the few remaining such areas in Europe. It is the only true delta and also the largest river mouth in the Republic of Croatia.
The Neretva Delta is a famous farming ground for tangerines, watermelons, tomatoes, grapes and many other agricultural products. It is extremely rich in eel, which, along with frogs, is an integral part of the most famous local gastronomic specialty, Neretva brudet.
During the last century, a real labyrinth of canals was dug through the Neretva valley to irrigate arable land. Perfect for exploring.
In order to preserve Neretva’s history and tradition, every year in August, on the stretch from Metković to Ploče (22 kilometers), a traditional boat marathon is held. Currently, it is the biggest amateur sports event in Croatia, where 35 teams have to set out and row the mentioned section as quickly as possible. The winning team is crowned with the shield of Prince Domagoj.
Visit the Archaeological Museum of Narona built on the remains of a temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus. On an area of about 1000 m2 there are 900 exhibits found either in the temple, on the forum in front of it or on the entire site of ancient Narona.
Make sure to visit the Natural History Museum of Metković, which presents the rich diversity of flora and fauna of the Neretva Valley.
In Metković, all the wealth that the animal world has to offer is largely preserved. The best example of this is the fascinating ornithological collection located in the Metković Museum of Natural History, which contains more than 340 exhibits.
